Initiation

Every year over 1500 new varieties, belonging to many different crops, are initiated for micropropagation at SBW BV. We develop a complete protocol for the micropropagation of new crops or we adapt an existing one. Some varieties are cleaned from pathogens such as viruses, fungi or bacteria. Other varieties, especially belonging to crops such as Petunia and Verbena, are certified according to the Naktuinbouw system.
Whichever type of initiation we use, from every clone we obtain a test sample of plants which is sent to the client who checks their identity and trueness to type. This procedure ensures that every clone from each successfully established initiation of a variety is checked before large-scale production is started.

Production

After the initiation has been completed, the micropropagation process can be started. The client decides whether his plants are to be propagated at SBW BV or at another micropropagation company. SBW BV has the capacity for and know-how to execute large-scale micropropagation. It is our main activity. With 24 culture rooms and almost 100 sterile transfer cabinets we are capable of producing large numbers of a single variety and of handling many different types of crops at the same time.

Managing the production of so many crops and varieties was only made possible after specialized software had been developed to plan the production process and to keep track of the location of each order. The product itself may be a rooted plant in a tissue-culture vial or a weaned plant in any desired tray from the greenhouse. The product can be delivered in the Netherlands or be shipped to other countries depending on the demands of the client.
